At the foot of Acropolis. Overview
You know what struck me first about At the foot of Acropolis? The name is literally spot-on – I mean, you step outside and there’s the ancient citadel looming right above you, close enough that you can actually make out individual columns without squinting. It’s one of those rare places where the marketing isn’t exaggerating for once.
The location is honestly unbeatable if you’re serious about exploring Athens beyond the typical tourist shuffle. You’re walking distance from the Acropolis Museum (maybe ten minutes at a leisurely pace), but more importantly, you’re right in the thick of Koukaki neighborhood – which, if you ask me, is where the real Athens happens these days. I’d wander out in the morning and stumble across these tiny kafeneia where old guys are playing backgammon at 9 AM, or little bakeries that smell like fresh spanakopita and have lines of locals, not tourists. The metro station at Syngrou-Fix is close by too, so you can actually get around without dealing with taxi drivers who suddenly forget how to speak English when they see you.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to nail that sweet spot between comfort and character. The rooms aren’t huge – this is Athens, after all, not some sprawling resort – but they’re thoughtfully designed with these cool marble accents that nod to the ancient history literally towering over you. The staff genuinely seems to know their stuff about the neighborhood, and I don’t mean they just hand you a generic tourist map. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the front desk guy sent me to this family taverna three blocks away where I ended up having the best moussaka of my trip (and honestly, probably my life). The 4-star rating feels right – it’s polished without being stuffy, comfortable without trying too hard to impress you with unnecessary bells and whistles.
Here’s the thing though – and this might actually be a selling point depending on your perspective – you’re going to hear the city. Athens is vibrant and a little chaotic, and that energy definitely filters in, especially if you’re facing the street. But I actually loved falling asleep to the distant sounds of people chatting on terraces and the occasional motorbike puttering by. It felt authentic, you know? Plus, if you’re planning to explore the Acropolis early (which you absolutely should, before the tour groups descend), you’ll appreciate being able to roll out of bed and be at the entrance in five minutes. The 9.1 rating makes total sense to me – it’s the kind of place that does exactly what it promises, does it well, and doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Wonderful location, quiet, peaceful, private, updated old home, property owner was wonderful
What could be improved: Small bathroom but that is to be expected with this type of original property.Kathy from United States – 20 October 2024 (10/10)

The house was a real gem!! We would definitely stay here again! The host was very nice and everything was perfect from the first step inside the house! The best surprise was that the house came with the cat Kaizer! He was absolutely adorable and to be honest, we didn`t want to leave the house at all. It was so nice to sit on the balcony, just above the pedestrian street, and observe tourists passing by, taking photos and discussing, while having the cat relaxing in my lap!
Please, if you stay here, Be kind to Kaizer and ALL other cats in Plaka Athen!Bianca from Brazil – 1 August 2024 (10/10)
The location is perfect, close to akropoles and to the shops and restaurants around. Plus the place is out of a film…tourist would stop by to take pictures! The most beautiful house ever. We've had the best experience. The host provided breakfast amenities and fruits and that was also so nice for our stay 🙂 <3 Lovely time in Athens.

Great location. Huge house right below the Acropolis on one side and on the edge of the Plaka on the other. Nicely appointed and the owner was very helpful.

Absolutely perfect. First time visiting Athens. Could not have asked for more. Felt like a local resident due to location, charming and tasteful furnishings/decorations, and classic design/layout of house. Location is unbelievable. Along with proximity to the Acropolis, there's endless restaurants and shops surrounding, and the house is tucked away on a quiet walkway. Also enjoyed the garden areas and beautiful plants. The host was fantastic and super easy and communicative. I look forward to staying again in the future.
What could be improved: No complaints of any sort. Was perfect for my family.Mary from Australia – 20 June 2024 (10/10)
Location location, less than 150m to the Acropolis entrance , a beautiful taverna next door . Plaka shops within metres. The home is unique, lots of artwork, being in a persons home.
What could be improved: You cannot park in this area and you cannot be dropped off. You will need to be dropped off at Hadrians Arch about 200m away. We had no problem as we had no car. Would definitely stay here with the family againCynthia from United States – 4 June 2024 (10/10)
