Athenaeum Intercontinental by IHG Overview
You know what caught me off guard about the Athenaeum Intercontinental by IHG? It’s one of those places that manages to feel both grand and actually livable at the same time. I mean, sure, it’s got that five-star polish you’d expect, but there’s something about the way the staff remembers your coffee order after day two that makes it feel less like a fancy hotel machine and more like… well, somewhere you’d actually want to hang out.
The lobby’s impressive without being intimidating – I spent way too much time people-watching from those deep leather chairs near the windows. Actually, the whole place has this thing where you notice the details without them screaming at you. The marble floors don’t echo like crazy (thank god), and whoever picked the lighting knew what they were doing because everything looks good but never feels like you’re under a spotlight. The rooms are honestly bigger than I expected, and I appreciate that they didn’t go overboard with the minimalist thing – there are actual places to put your stuff, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many luxury hotels forget about that. The bathrooms are the kind where you find yourself taking longer showers than necessary, if you know what I mean.
Here’s the thing though – it’s the small stuff that really gets you. The concierge team actually knows the city inside and out (not just the tourist traps), the elevators are fast enough that you don’t do that awkward small talk dance, and the housekeeping is so good it’s almost spooky how they manage to reset everything without disturbing the organized chaos of your belongings. I stayed during what must have been a busy conference season, and even then the service never felt rushed or stretched thin. The restaurant situation is solid too – not just hotel food that’s trying too hard to be something it’s not, but actual good meals you’d order again. And honestly, for a place with this kind of reputation, the whole experience feels refreshingly unpretentious. That 8.4 rating makes sense when you’re there – it’s the kind of place where everything works the way it should, without drama or disappointment, which is rarer than you’d think in this business.
