But honestly, this one surprised me in the best way. The lobby has this warm, understated elegance that doesn’t try too hard, if you know what I mean. It’s got these beautiful marble touches that nod to classic Greek style without feeling like a theme park, and the lighting actually makes you look good in your travel-weary state (trust me on this one).

What really won me over was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about making your stay work. The front desk guy – I think his name was Dimitris – actually drew me a little map showing the quieter route to the Acropolis Museum, avoiding the tourist chaos on the main drags. Little touches like that make such a difference when you’re trying to navigate a city. The rooms are well-appointed without being fussy – good blackout curtains (essential if you’re dealing with jet lag), decent water pressure in the shower, and beds that don’t leave you counting sheep all night. I stayed on the fourth floor and it was surprisingly quiet, even though we’re talking about Athens here where the city never really sleeps.

The location is actually pretty smart – you’re close enough to the action that you can walk to most major sites, but far enough from Monastiraki and Plaka that you’re not dealing with the late-night party crowds stumbling around outside your window. I could grab coffee at this tiny local place around the corner every morning where the owner barely spoke English but made the kind of strong Greek coffee that actually wakes you up. The hotel’s breakfast was solid too, nothing revolutionary but they had proper Greek yogurt with local honey and decent pastries. What impressed me most was the attention to detail – housekeeping left little bottles of local olive oil as gifts, and when I mentioned I was interested in Byzantine history, the concierge handed me a photocopied walking route to some lesser-known churches that ended up being a highlight of my trip. It’s that 8.4 rating in action, honestly – not perfect, but genuinely thoughtful in ways that matter when you’re actually living there for a few days.

  Perfect location for the marathon. Expo at the end of the road, and the nearest pick up point for the coach to Marathon is only 1200 metres away.
  There are 24 hour kiosks and food court nearby.
  Acropolis in walking distance.
  The bed was possibly the comfiest I've ever slept in.

  Athens Avenue Hotel is very nice, rooms are modern and it's very close to acropolis, and all the rooftop bars plus adult entertainment as well. Lots of restaurants within walking distance.
