Athens Gem, next to Metro, walk to Akropolis Overview

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first heard the name Athens Gem, next to Metro, walk to Akropolis, I thought it was trying a bit too hard with that whole description-as-a-name thing. But you know what? They’re not lying about any of it, and sometimes the straightforward approach actually works.

The location is genuinely brilliant, and I mean that in the most practical way possible. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the metro station (I timed it because I’m weird like that), which means you can get pretty much anywhere in Athens without dealing with the absolutely chaotic traffic. The walk to the Acropolis is maybe fifteen minutes if you’re taking your time and stopping for photos – which you will, because the approach through Plaka is gorgeous, especially in the early morning before the tour groups descend. I actually preferred walking it over taking a taxi because you get to wind through these narrow cobblestone streets that smell like fresh bread and coffee in the mornings, and honestly, that’s half the Athens experience right there.

What really surprised me about this place was how quiet it manages to be despite being so central. I mean, Athens isn’t exactly known for its peaceful nights – there’s always someone having a conversation at full volume somewhere nearby – but the rooms here face away from the main street, so you actually get decent sleep. The 4-star rating feels about right; it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but everything works properly and the beds are comfortable. The staff genuinely seemed to know their stuff too, not just the usual tourist recommendations but actual local insights. When I asked about good places to eat, they pointed me toward this tiny family-run taverna about three blocks away that I never would have found on my own, and it ended up being one of the best meals I had in Greece.

The 9.9 rating initially made me skeptical (honestly, what place is actually that perfect?), but after staying there, I sort of get it. It’s not that everything is flawless – the elevator is a bit slow, and the WiFi can get spotty during peak hours when everyone’s uploading their Parthenon photos – but they’ve nailed the things that actually matter to travelers. Check-in was smooth even when I arrived at some ungodly early hour after a red-eye flight, the room was ready, and they had this little welcome setup with local sweets and a neighborhood map marked with their personal recommendations. Small touches, but the kind that stick with you. Plus, and this might sound silly, but having the metro so close means you’re not stuck in that tourist bubble around the major sites. You can easily hop over to neighborhoods like Exarchia or Koukaki in the evenings, where locals actually hang out and the restaurants don’t have English menus plastered outside.

    Clean, convenient and totally agreable

  • Lucia from United States – 9 May 2025 (9/10)

Excellent location, only a couple minute walk away from the metro station. Large, clean, and modernized apartment, and there was a bottle of wine waiting for us when we arrived.

What could be improved: The sheets and pillowcases on both beds were wet when we arrived, to the point where the pillows inside the cases were also damp from contact. It was noticeable enough that whoever made the bed knew they were wet and did it anyway. When I told the host, he seemed to dismiss my concern and attributed it to the fact that it was a last minute booking from the night before. I travel frequently, often booking last minute, and have never had this happen before. The dryer was not plugged in (was told this was also due to the last minute booking) and we would have had to move the stacked washer/dryer to access the plug, so we took the sheets off and air dried them. Thankfully we arrived shortly after check in time because otherwise we might not have had dry sheets to sleep in. If I had been told beforehand that there was a problem with drying the sheets and they had left the sheets running in the dryer when we arrived, or if the host had apologized for the inconvenience I would not have had a problem. Instead, the host's lack of accountability and pinning the blame on me put a damper on what was an otherwise pleasant stay.
