Central House in Plaka Overview
I’ll be honest – when I first heard about Central House in Plaka, I was a bit skeptical. Another boutique hotel claiming to be “authentic” in Athens‘ most touristy neighborhood? But you know what, this place actually gets it right. Walking up to the entrance, you immediately notice how they’ve managed to blend into the old quarter without screaming “look at me” like some of the flashier spots around here.
The location is pretty much perfect if you want to be in the thick of things without dealing with the chaos of Monastiraki Square (which, let’s face it, can be overwhelming after 10 AM when the tour groups descend). You’re literally steps from those narrow cobblestone streets that wind up toward the Acropolis – I mean, you can practically touch the ancient walls from some angles. But here’s the thing most people don’t realize: Plaka has this amazing quiet side once you venture beyond the main drags like Adrianou Street. The hotel sits in one of these calmer pockets, so you get the charm without the constant street noise. Well, mostly – there’s still the occasional late-night revelry, but honestly, that’s part of the Athens experience.
What really impressed me was how the staff seemed to actually know the neighborhood. The guy at reception (I think his name was Dimitris?) didn’t just point me toward the obvious tourist spots – he mentioned this tiny taverna tucked away on Diogenous Street where locals actually eat, and suggested the best time to climb up to the Acropolis entrance to avoid the crowds. These are the kinds of insights you can’t Google, you know? The rooms themselves feel thoughtfully put together without being overly precious about it. The bathrooms are surprisingly spacious for a historic building conversion, and the air conditioning actually works – which sounds basic, but you’d be amazed how many “charming” Athens hotels skimp on the cooling situation. I stayed during a particularly brutal July heat wave, and my room stayed comfortable throughout.
The building itself has character – you can feel the history in the thick walls and the way the floors creak just slightly when you walk around. It’s not pristine or sterile, which I appreciated. There’s this lovely little courtyard area where you can have your coffee in the morning before the day gets too hot, and honestly, it felt more like staying at a well-appointed friend’s place than a typical hotel. The 9.4 rating makes sense when you experience how smoothly everything runs. Check-in was seamless, housekeeping was unobtrusive but thorough, and when I had a question about extending my stay, they sorted it out without any drama. For a 4-star place in this prime location, the value is solid – you’re paying for the neighborhood and the experience, not just a bed, and it delivers on that promise.

The location is very good, with great deck and a very nice view of the acropolis (although not of any monuments).
It was easy to walk to everywhere in the central district within 30 minutes or so. There is also easy metro access to get to places further afield.
The host was very easy to reach and very informative and friendly.
There is a great little coffee and pastry place right around the corner. Plus many restaurants within a block or two.Alana from Ireland (9/10)

Very clean and modern small apartment. Nice view of the Acropolis and huge porch area. Bathroom, and kitchen were really nice. Bed is a little awkward but very comfortable. Just a word of caution, the apartment is up 2.5-3 flights of stairs so please make sure that's something you can handle before booking. Would 100% stay again, we loved the place!

I had a fantastic 6-day stay in this apartment with my teenage son. The location was perfect—everything we wanted to see and visit was within walking distance. The apartment itself was spacious, comfortable, and exactly what we needed for our trip to Athens. Highly recommend for anyone looking for convenience and comfort!
