Charming Mini-Palace in colorful Exarhia area Overview
You know what caught me off guard about the Charming Mini-Palace in colorful Exarhia area? It actually lives up to that “mini-palace” name – though honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first saw it tucked between a vintage record shop and one of those tiny tavernas that Exarhia does so well. The entrance has this beautiful old marble doorway that makes you feel like you’re stepping into someone’s aristocratic grandmother’s home, if that makes sense.
Exarhia itself is… well, it’s not for everyone, but if you get it, you really get it. This is Athens‘ bohemian heart – think street art covering every available wall, university students debating politics over coffee that costs about a euro, and tiny bookshops that stay open until midnight. The hotel sits right in the thick of it on a side street that’s quiet enough for decent sleep (I was worried about noise, but the double-glazed windows actually work), yet you’re literally two minutes from Strefi Hill where locals go to watch the sunset over the Acropolis. I mean, tourists pay ridiculous money for rooftop bars with that view, and here you just walk up a neighborhood hill.
The rooms have character – actual character, not that fake boutique hotel nonsense. Mine had these gorgeous high ceilings with original moldings and a bathroom that felt like it belonged in a 1920s Athenian apartment, complete with those hexagonal floor tiles. The bed was comfortable enough, though the pillows were a bit soft for my taste (you can always ask for extras). What I loved was how they’ve kept the old-world charm while making everything actually functional – the wifi works, the air conditioning doesn’t sound like a freight train, and there’s even a little balcony where I had my morning coffee while watching the neighborhood wake up. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which is refreshing. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the guy at the front desk didn’t just hand me a tourist brochure – he actually walked me outside and pointed toward this incredible little psistaria three blocks away where I had the best grilled octopus of my entire trip. That’s the thing about staying in Exarhia versus, say, Plaka or Kolonaki – you’re eating and drinking where Athenians actually go, not where they think tourists want to go. Sure, it’s grittier and you’ll hear more anarchist graffiti than ancient history, but that’s exactly why I’d come back to this place in a heartbeat.
