Plaka Filotheis House A overview
You know what struck me first about Plaka Filotheis House A? It’s actually tucked away in one of those quiet corners of Plaka where you can still hear the morning church bells instead of just tour groups shuffling by. I mean, don’t get me wrong – you’re still right in the heart of Athens‘ old town, but there’s something almost residential about this little street that makes you feel like you’ve stumbled onto a secret.
The building itself has that authentic neoclassical charm that honestly, a lot of places in Plaka try to fake but this one just… has it naturally. Maybe it’s the way the morning light hits those traditional shutters, or how the stone stays cool even when it’s blazing hot outside in July. The rooms are what I’d call thoughtfully updated – they’ve kept the character (high ceilings, original details) but added the stuff you actually need, like proper air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a freight train. The beds are surprisingly comfortable too, which matters more than people think when you’ve been walking on ancient marble all day.
What I really appreciate is the location without the chaos. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from Monastiraki Square – I timed it because I’m weird like that – but far enough from the main drag that you’re not dealing with crowds of people taking selfies outside your window at 7 AM. There’s this little taverna just around the corner where the owner, Dimitris, makes the best gigantes beans I’ve had outside my Greek friend’s grandmother’s kitchen. He’ll probably try to convince you to try his homemade ouzo too (fair warning – it’s stronger than the tourist stuff). The whole area comes alive differently depending on when you’re there – early morning feels almost village-like with locals heading to work, but evenings have this warm, golden buzz as restaurants start lighting their outdoor tables.
Parking is… well, it’s Plaka, so forget about driving here. But honestly, you won’t need a car anyway. The metro’s close enough, and everything worth seeing is walkable. I actually enjoyed getting a bit lost in these narrow streets – there’s always some tiny Byzantine church or hidden courtyard you’ll stumble across. The hotel staff seems to get this too; they’re not pushing tours or anything, just genuinely helpful when you need directions or restaurant recommendations. One guy at the front desk drew me this little hand-sketched map to avoid the tourist traps near the Acropolis entrance, which probably saved me both money and sanity. It’s that kind of place – solid, unpretentious, and run by people who seem to actually care about Athens beyond just the obvious sights.

The location was great Could be improved: The location and it was so comfortable

The apartment is located 1 minute walk from the Cathedral of Athens, 5 minutes from Monastiraki Square, 5 minutes to the parliament, everything is really within walking distance. The Acropolis, old streets are nearby. The apartment is clean, the kitchen had sunflower oil, salt, pepper, coffee, tea, sugar, for which special thanks to the owner. The bed is comfortable, we slept well, lots of pillows, air conditioners worked well, it was still cool at night. There is a grocery store 100 m away, restaurants and cafes started at 40 m, but the street is quiet, calm, no noise was heard. Could be improved: just one piece of advice: hang a curtain in the shower.😃

Amazing location. Large, comfortable and well equipped apartment. Central and yet quiet. Could be improved: Not enough toilet paper…we had to buy our own. No view, but we knew this in advance.

My husband, two children and I stay in the apartment and it was good for our stay! The host gave us detailed instructions for checking in and answer the messages fast! The rooms are comfortable, and cleaned, and even had a washing machine. The location is great, close to all other touristic area. Could be improved: The only downside for me, was that the check in and check out was not flexible. We needed to pay to stash our bags until the 3pm check in time as it was the earliest the host allowed us to get to the apartment. The host provided the address of the place we could stash our bags after 10 hours flight. If the host were more flexible for the check in and check out, our stay in Athens could had been perfect.

Could be improved: Waiting for the hot water, running out of hot water
