There’s this tiny souvlaki place about four blocks northeast that doesn’t have a sign in English, and a wine bar tucked behind the cathedral that serves some incredible Assyrtiko. The metro connections from Syntagma are genuinely useful too – not just for airport runs, but for day trips to places like Aegina or even down to the coast.

Look, it’s got a solid 8.4 rating for good reason, and after staying there I’d actually bump that up a bit. The space feels more generous than most Athens accommodations, the location can’t be beat without paying resort prices, and – this matters more than you’d think – it doesn’t feel like they’re nickel-and-diming you for every little thing. Sometimes you find places that just get the balance right between being in the thick of things and giving you a genuine place to decompress. This is one of those places.
