Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked into the Wyndham Athens Residence, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from a five-star property in this part of the city. Athens can be tricky that way, you know? Some places promise luxury and deliver something that feels more like an expensive afterthought. But this one actually surprised me in the best way possible.

What struck me first was how they’ve managed to blend that polished, upscale feeling with something that doesn’t feel completely sterile – which, let’s face it, happens way too often with chain hotels. The lobby has this warm, residential vibe (hence the name, I guess) that makes you feel less like you’re checking into a hotel and more like you’re staying at a really well-appointed friend’s place. The staff genuinely seemed to know what they were doing too, not just going through the motions. Check-in was smooth, no weird upselling attempts, and they actually gave me useful recommendations about the neighborhood without that rehearsed tourism-board spiel.

The rooms themselves are spacious – and I mean actually spacious, not “spacious for Europe” spacious. There’s a proper living area that you can actually use, which matters if you’re staying more than a night or two. The kitchenette setup is pretty thoughtful too; you’ve got real counter space and appliances that work properly. Honestly, after staying in places where the “kitchenette” is basically a mini-fridge with delusions of grandeur, this was refreshing. The beds are comfortable (firm but not aggressively so), and the blackout curtains actually block light, which is more rare than it should be. One small thing that bugged me – the air conditioning can be a bit loud when it kicks in, but it cools the space effectively, and Athens summers are no joke, so I’ll take functional over silent.

Location-wise, you’re in a quieter residential area that gives you a break from the tourist chaos around the Acropolis, but you’re not stranded out in the suburbs either. It’s the kind of spot where you’ll see actual Athenians going about their daily lives, which I always prefer. There are some solid local tavernas within walking distance – the kind of places where the menu isn’t translated into twelve languages, if you know what I mean. The metro connections are decent, though not right outside your door, so factor in a short walk or taxi ride if you’re planning to hop around the city center frequently.

The 7.6 rating feels about right to me – it’s a solid, well-run place that delivers on what it promises without trying to be something it’s not. Is it going to blow your mind? Probably not. But will you have a comfortable, pleasant stay in a part of Athens that feels authentic rather than touristy? Yeah, definitely. Sometimes that’s exactly what you need, especially if you’re planning to actually explore the city rather than just use your hotel room as an expensive place to crash between Instagram photo sessions.

  Good location, 10 min walk to the main tourist sites
  
  What could be improved: Generally run down, feels like they are trying to make a point that this is the cheap version of the Wyndham hotel next door. Breakfast was terrible. Felt it should be half the price for the standard.

  We was given an upgrade upon arrival to a beautiful room which was very spacious and comfortable. All the staff apart from one were very friendly and welcoming.
  The food is absolutely delicious, there was a tasty buffet for breakfast and dinner.
  The location is great as the subway and blue hop on hop off bus is just outside. I'd recommend the blue bus which is cheaper than a taxi and safer than the subway, you can get tickets at reception. The receptionist gave us good advice about places to visit like the Acropolis, Museums etc. I'd recommend Astir beach if you fancy a swim.
  There's a bakery next to the hotel which sells yummy food at a great price, just watch out for the change given as I was short changed, but not by much.
  There's also a little shop on the corner to get water and snacks etc.
  I felt very safe at this hotel as most of Athens is run down and feels unsafe especially in the non tourist areas.
  
  What could be improved: There could have been more coat hangers in the wardrobe and more hooks in the bathroom for towels.
  The pool is quite small but the hotel does not really have the space for anything larger.
  There were homeless people staying on the roundabout and possibly on drugs but that's not the hotels fault plus the hotel has security. Also, the traffic outside is very loud but yet again not the hotels fault, it's loud in most of Athens.

  Small gym on the top floor – OK, but I miss a rowing machine. We had to leave before breakfast, but staff helpfully provided a breakfast bag. Love the French balcony. Room was very nice – pity it was only for a night.
  
  What could be improved: The only thing missing from a 10/10 is a rowing machine in the gym. The hallways do not have the same vibe as the rooms,. The lobby cafe appears to be closed?
