I could walk to most of the major sites, though honestly some of those hills will get your heart rate up (pack good walking shoes, seriously). The local tavernas nearby aren’t the touristy ones you’ll find plastered all over Instagram; they’re the places where you’ll hear more Greek than English, which is exactly what I was hoping for. There’s this little bakery about two blocks over that does these incredible spanakopita – I probably went there four times in three days. The metro access is solid too, though I found myself walking more than I expected just because the streets are so interesting to explore.

I’ll be honest, the building itself isn’t anything fancy from the outside – it’s just a regular Athens apartment block – but that 9.7 rating makes total sense once you’re inside. The host clearly knows what travelers actually need: reliable WiFi (worked great for my work calls), good water pressure, air conditioning that doesn’t sound like a freight train, and blackout curtains for those post-travel recovery sleeps. Check-in was smooth, though make sure you’re prepared for those six flights of stairs if the elevator’s acting up – it happened once during my stay, but hey, that’s apartment living. The whole experience felt authentic in a way that chain hotels just can’t match, like you’re getting a real slice of Athens life instead of some sanitized version of it.
