Athens Zafolia Hotel overview
You know what caught me off guard about Athens Zafolia Hotel? Walking in, I honestly wasn’t expecting much from another 4-star place in Athens – I mean, the city’s packed with them. But there’s something refreshingly unpretentious about this spot that won me over pretty quickly. The lobby has this warm, lived-in feeling that doesn’t try too hard to impress, with marble that’s actually from somewhere nearby (not the fake stuff you see everywhere). What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to genuinely know their neighborhood – when I asked about getting to the National Archaeological Museum, the guy at the front desk didn’t just point me toward the metro, he told me about this little shortcut through a park that locals use.
The rooms themselves are… well, they’re solid. Nothing Instagram-worthy, but honestly refreshing after staying in places that are all style and no substance. The beds are actually comfortable (you’d be surprised how often that’s not the case), and the AC works properly – crucial during those brutal Athens summers when the city turns into an oven. I stayed on the fourth floor and it was surprisingly quiet at night, even though you’re still in the heart of things. The bathroom’s compact but functional, and they’ve got this European-style shower setup that actually has decent water pressure. One small thing that bugged me – the WiFi gets a bit spotty in the evenings when everyone’s streaming, but it’s fine for emails and basic browsing.
What really sold me on this place though is how it sits in the city. You’re close enough to walk to Syntagma Square without breaking a sweat, but far enough away that you’re not dealing with all the tourist chaos at your doorstep. There’s this fantastic little taverna about two blocks away that I never would’ve found if the hotel manager hadn’t mentioned it – proper Greek food, not the sanitized stuff they serve near the Acropolis. The whole area feels more like actual Athens instead of tourist Athens, if that makes sense. Check-in was smooth (they held my bags for hours before my room was ready without any fuss), and honestly, for the price point and that 8.3 rating, I can see why people keep coming back. It’s not going to win any design awards, but sometimes you just want a place that does the basics really well without all the pretense.
Athens’s hotels showcase the perfect blend of ancient heritage and modern comfort, with many featuring archaeological tour services and authentic Greek hospitality.

Excellent customer service from the lady on reception, she was knowledgeable and very helpful sharing information about the city, travel, shops, busses etc. The room was clean and the roof pool was much needed in the August heat! The breakfast had a broad selection and plenty for our vegetarian family to enjoy too. The sunset from the roof is good too Could be improved: The roof pool was not as it was pictured as there was no umbrella’s by the sun loungers and the while outdoors roof seating area, that looks very attractive in the photos, was empty of seats. It was incredibly hot in August so umbrellas by the pool are needed!

Great choice at breakfast and all the food we had in the hotel was really good. The air conditioning was excellent and made a huge difference as there was a heatwave during our stay. The family room we had was spacious and had a little fridge. The bathrooms were well stocked with shower gel and shampoo etc. The pool area on the roof was a good size for the hotel and there we plenty of times when we had the pool to ourselves. Good selection of drinks available as well as ice cream. Could be improved: Would have been nice to have a slightly larger selection of food on the menu. The drinks were expensive, but it wasn't just the hotel. It seemed most places we went, the drinks cost more than we were expecting. The location is ok, but the road outside could get busy and it was too far for us to walk to get to the tourist attraction. However, we had no problem getting taxis and as long as they were prebooked by the hotel or on an app, were not expensive.
